I had called it Our First Test, because it was happening just after the massacre at Charlie Hebdo, in Paris. It was the end of January 2015 and Raif Badawi, young Saudi blogger, had already been in jail for 2 years. His freedom had been crushed, and he was to get the first 50 of the 1000 lashes that are part of the crazy punishment he received for supposedly having insulted his religion on his blog.
Now, one year from then, Badawi is still in jail. So I’m reposting that long form cartoon – it was also the first I had ever drew. I’m doing that because we failed our first test: after our big and thunderous demonstrations in the streets of Paris, to reaffirm the value of freedom, we are not protecting all those people whose freedom of speech is endangered on a daily basis.
